ISHS Authors Guide
|
¡P
Reading this page means that you are about to prepare an article
to be presented at an ISHS Symposium or Meeting. Taking into account the
following instructions will facilitate the publication of your paper in Acta
Horticulturae afterwards.
¡P
Remember that only papers presented at ISHS Symposia are
published in Acta Horticulturae after being accepted, reviewed and edited by
the editorial board of the Symposium/Meeting involved. This is also why you
should submit your contribution directly to the Convener of the Symposium you
will attend and NOT to the ISHS Secretariat.
¡P
Acta Horticulturae is used for publishing research and review
articles. Research reports of an oral or poster presentation should contain a
commentary on a finished research project. A review article deals with knowledge
obtained about a certain subject. Abstracts or copies of posters are not
published.
¡P
It is the aim of the International Society for Horticultural
Science that all papers published have a similar lay-out and are printed
in the same font: "Times New Roman 12 points".
¡P
In order to make page lay-out corrections possible and in view
of future electronic publishing, papers should be submitted both as hard copy
(printout on paper) AND on computer disk. In the event of differences between
the printout and the electronic version, the printout will be used as
reference.
Papers should be submitted directly to the convener of the
Symposium. We need a hard copy but also we need the data-file on a floppy
disk (any
commonly-used word-processor format will do but preferably use Microsoft Word
files)
1. General
Information on the paper
1.1. Length of
the paper.
As a rule the
length of the paper should not exceed 8 pages, attachments included. Rules for
the format are given in 1.4 and must be followed strictly.
1.2. Language,
units, abbreviations.
The official
language of the series Acta Horticulturae is English.
Explain
abbreviations when used for the first time and use the metric system
exclusively.
1.3. Reprints.
Reprints of your paper can be
ordered from the ISHS Secretariat using the order form for reprints.
Orders should be
sent to the ISHS Secretariat and not to the convener of the Symposium. Reprints
will only be printed after the ISHS Secretariat receives the reviewed and
edited manuscripts from the convener.
Remember: payment
should be made together with the order. Price depends on the length of your
paper. Orders for which no payment is received will not be printed. Most
convenient way of payment is to fill out the "Credit Card
Authorization" part on the order form.
1.4. Page
Lay-out.
Headings of
Paragraphs and Sub-Paragraphs should be numbered using the decimal system for
example: 1.; 1.1.; 1.1.1. and 1.1.2.
Titles of
Paragraphs should be underlined. Titles of Sub-Paragraphs should not
be underlined.
Try to omit the
use of footnotes in the text as well as in the tables.
2. Plan to be
used for a research report
A paper reporting the results of
research should be organized in the following order:
2.1. Heading
Heading of the
report comprises:
¡P
Title of the paper in bold
capitals, concise and without abbreviations.
¡P
Plant names either in Latin (in
italics and not underlined) or in the language of the paper.
¡P
Author¡¦s name, without
titles.
¡P
Name and address of the Institute.
¡P
Reference number, if any, of
research project or publication in the research organization.
Do not refer to
footnotes in the heading.
2.2. Abstract
An English
abstract is required. If the paper is in French, an English
title must be mentioned at the head of the abstract in English. It should
contain the statement of the problem and the results in short. Therefore make
it concise and comprehensive, limited to 200-300 words.
The abstract is
all most readers will ever read of your article !
2.3. Keywords
At least five to
seven key words not used in the title, mention also species (common and
scientific names), chemicals, physiological and pathological terms.
2.4. Introduction
This should
include scope and statement of the problem and survey of previous work, if any,
for a good understanding. Furthermore object and purpose of the investigation.
2.5. Materials, Methods,
Experiments
Describe very
concisely the plant materials, the growing technique, methods used and lay-out
of experiments.
2.6. Results
These should be
presented in a logical and objective form. State conclusions as established
facts, but reserve interpretations and speculations for the discussion.
2.7. Discussion
Interpret your
conclusions and discuss their significance, their possible identity with or
discrepancy from previous findings. Try to answer the questions as formulated
in the introduction. Try to give an outlook for future research.
2.8. Acknowledgements
These are only
made for significant contributions by special funds, commercial firms or the
author¡¦s professional associates.
2.9. References
Use the following
ways to make references in the text:
author (year)
(author, year)
in case there are
two or more authors for the same publications:
first author et al. (year).
In the references,
list the authors in alphabetical order, subsequently in chronological order for
publications of the same author(s).
References have
the following lay-out:
for journals:
author(s), year, title, journal, volume number, (issue
number): page-page
for books:
author(s), year, title, (editor), publisher, address, pages
referred to
Abbreviation of
journal names according to the "List of scientific and technical serial
publications regularly seen in the compilation of Horticultural Abstracts,
vols. 36-40, 1966-70", which appeared in Hort. Abst. vol. 40, 1970, index
pages 225-238.
2.10. Attachments
Tables (see
model):
Use tables sparingly. A title is
given directly above each table providing sufficient information to keep all
column headings short. Place all heading to the left of their column.
The size of the table should not exceed the standard page width and length
(see page lay-out).
Graphs and line drawings (see model):
send originals and do not use copies ! All graphs and drawings should be in
black ink only. Keep in mind that the size might be reduced for printing, so
the text should also allow reduction.
Photographs:
Make sure to include clear and perfect pictures. (for budgetary reasons
colour photographs will only be printed in colour after special agreement with
the convener)
3. Plan to be
used for a review article
A review article should contain
following parts:
¡P
1. Heading
¡P
2. Keywords
¡P
3. Abstract
¡P
4. Introduction
¡P
5. Items
¡P
6. Concluding Remarks
¡P
7. Acknowledgements
¡P
8. References.
4. Page Lay-out
Guide
Papers should be
submitted both as hard copy (printout on paper) and on floppy-disc containing
the text of the article in a commonly used word processor format.
4.1. Sheets
Please use first
quality white paper for your printout.
The printable
area on your sheet of paper is strictly fixed to 15
cm wide by 23.5 cm long
or in inches 5.95"
wide by 9.25" long (whatever paper size is used
!).
For A4
size paper this printable area is obtained by entering following margin
settings in the 'page setup' of your word-processor.
in
centimeters:
top: 3.7
cm; bottom: 2.5 cm; left: 2.4 cm and right: 3.3 cm.
in Inches:
top:
1.46"; bottom: 0.98"; left: 0.95" and right: 1.3"
4.2. Font - Printer
Papers should be
printed preferably on laser-writers. Ink-jet printers also give good results.
The font to be
used for printing you article is "Times New Roman 12 points".
Papers typed on a
type-writer are not accepted.
4.3. Spacing
Text should be
plain, single spaced, except Latin names which should be in italics and
paragraph titles which should be underlined.
Titles of Sub-Paragraphs should not be underlined.
Text should be
aligned 'justified' in order to fill the entire printable
area.
4.4. Indentation
First lines of
text paragraphs should have a 0.63 cm indentation. Surnames of authors in the
reference-list should not be indented, the next lines however should have a
0.63 cm indentation (see model).
The distance
between text and items like little tables and figures should always be 2 lines.
4.5. Headings
Type title
of paper in bold capital letters at the top of the first page.
Please type the heading exactly as shown on example 1, do not
type title and author¡¦s names in the centre of the page.
In case there are
two authors with a different address, make a column with the address for each
one.
4.6. Keywords
At least five to
seven index words can be mentioned in one line.
4.7. Abstract
Each paper should
have an abstract in English.
